What Is Bo's Abdominal Acupuncture?

Bo's Abdominal Acupuncture is a theory-led, standardized system developed by Prof. Bo Zhiyun through sustained clinical observation, research and teaching.

Clinical development began 1972

The clinical encounter that opened a new path

In 1972, Prof. Bo Zhiyun treated a patient with severe lower-back pain following a lumbar sprain. When the initial conventional acupuncture approach did not relieve the pain, he selected two abdominal points: Qihai (CV6) and Guanyuan (CV4).

The severe symptoms disappeared within approximately five minutes. This unexpected response prompted Prof. Bo to investigate whether the abdomen contained systematic point relationships capable of influencing the whole body.

That clinical observation became the starting point for two decades of exploration. The work gradually moved from an individual response to a theoretical framework, defined point relationships and a standardized method of clinical practice.

From a clinical discovery to a complete academic and therapeutic system

The therapy was not formed in a single moment. Clinical observation, theoretical study and public academic exchange gradually shaped the system between 1970 and 1993.

  1. Clinical practice

Prof. Bo began acupuncture work at the Changzhi Iron and Steel Company Staff Hospital in Shanxi Province, building extensive clinical experience through daily outpatient care.

  2. Abdominal acupuncture discovery

The rapid response observed while treating severe lower-back pain initiated a sustained study of abdominal point relationships.

  3. Technical exchange

Abdominal acupuncture was presented at the Shanxi Provincial Acupuncture Technique Competition and began to circulate among professional peers.

  4. First press report

Shanxi Daily published an early report on the developing therapy.

  5. Formal naming

After twenty years of sustained exploration and the discovery of the abdominal prenatal meridian system, Prof. Bo formally established and named the method Bo's Abdominal Acupuncture. The Changzhi Iron and Steel Company Television Station produced the feature documentary 《神奇的腹针疗法》 (“The Miraculous Abdominal Acupuncture Therapy”).

  6. Announcing the discovery to the world

Two papers published in Beijing Chinese Medicine—《腹针临床应用》 (“Clinical Application of Abdominal Acupuncture”) and 《神阙布气与腹针疗法的关系》 (“The Relationship between Shenque Qi Distribution and Abdominal Acupuncture”)—presented abdominal acupuncture and the Shenque system to the world, announcing the discovery of the body's earliest-forming whole-body regulatory system.

The Congenital Meridian System

The system developed beyond an isolated technique into a model for understanding how abdominal points relate to whole-body regulation.

Shenque system theory

A congenital network centred on the umbilical region

The Congenital Meridian theory traces the body's earliest formative and regulatory relationships to the foetal period. Within this model, Shenque (CV8) is understood as a central connection through which an early regulatory network relates to the whole body.

This framework guided the systematic study of abdominal point locations, prescription logic and clinical responses.

01

Superficial regulation

Point relationships in the superficial abdominal layer are used within the system to address musculoskeletal and whole-body functions.

02

Deep regulation

Deeper abdominal relationships form the internal regulation level associated with visceral functions.

A coherent and teachable clinical method

Bo's Abdominal Acupuncture brings theory, treatment principles, prescription design, point selection and operating technique into one structured system.
